1) Drive your car at least 20 minutes a week to help maintain its battery life
If your car has to sit for long periods, your car's battery can discharge – that means the voltage has decreased and is not at full operating capacity. Consumer Reports recommends you drive your car at least 20 minutes a week to help maintain its battery life. This means driving normally, not idling in your driveway. Not only will this get you out of the house, but it will benefit your battery and your engine as a whole.
2) Topping off the fluids
Check your car's fluids on a regular basis: engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid and fuel. When your car sits for long periods of time, the oil can settle and the fuel can separate, which can lead to engine problems. Driving the car to get the oil up to temperature helps reduce the moisture in the oil for longevity. Your local quick lube shop or your car dealer may be open for any light maintenance.
3) Clean the inside of your car & be pest-free
Don't be surprised if your car starts to smell after months of sitting there all alone. That's because food, snacks, drinks or used wipes that were forgotten could start to stink. Vacuuming the carpet is a good idea. Cockroaches or spiders can make your car their home if it's left alone for too long.
4) Check your tires
Keeping your tires properly inflated can help prevent flat spots. Low tire pressure and the weight of the car cause the tires to develop flat spots where the tires meet the road's surface, according to Edmunds, a resource for automotive information. A car sitting for a month or more can develop flat spots. Check your car's manual or door sticker for your tires' recommended tire pressure. Just driving your car periodically can help prevent flat spots.
5) Visit a repair shop
Repair shops are generally considered essential businesses, so they're not subject to government-imposed shutdowns. You should be able to visit safely with a mask and adequate social distancing.
